Hey y’all how is everyone doing on this fine ass friday. I don’t know about any of you but I am pretty stoked that it is the weekend. My Yankees just won 3 out of a 4 game series against the rays in Tampa Bay Florida and are now in boston for the weekend to finish out the 2018 regular season. Either way I am really excited to see how they finish out the 2018 regular season. But I don’t want to go on about my Yankees. No i want to talk about my personal favorites for the AL CY Young award. I recently just did my favorites to win the AL and NL MVP so I figured that i should talk about my favorites to win the AL/NL cy young award. So enough chitchat how about we jump right into this. So without further adieu here are my top 5 AL Cy Young award winner candidates.
1. Tampa Bay Rays Starting Pitcher Blake Snell: Okay first guy on the list is the Rays Most unlikely ace for the 2018 Season. Blake 2018 season has been more breathtaking then listening to Celine Dion sing my heart will go on from the movie titanic. ( I’m a history buff so I watched the movie for the historical part of it and not the romantic part of it.) But back to the point Blake is in his third year in the MLB and he is still very young at 25 but to put things into perspective last season he went 5-7. The most surprising thing is that he wasn’t originally voted into the all-star game.
He only got in because Corey Kluber opted out to play because of an injury. The fact that he wasn’t voted in really makes a compelling argument for the electoral college. This season with Tampa Bay Rays Blake has pitched in 30 games and in those games he has gotten a 21-5 record, a 1.90 ERA, 211 strikeouts and an 0.96 WHIP. Blake has also gotten a 31.1 strikeout percentage, a 3.52 stirkeout to walk ratio, a 2.98 FIP (fielder independent pitching) and 10.81 strikeouts per every 9 innings pitched for the 2018 season with the Tampa Bay Rays.
2. Cleveland Indians Starting Pitcher Corey Kluber: Okay second pitcher on the list is the reigning CY Young award Winner Indians Starting Pitcher Corey Kluber. Corey is definitely playing like the AL CY Young winner and AL wins and ERA leader in 2018. For the 2018 season with the Indians Corey has pitched in 32 games and in those 32 games he has gotten a 20-7 record, a 2.83 ERA, 216 strikeouts and an 0.97 WHIP. Corey has also gotten a 26.4 strikeout percentage, a 6.75 strikeout to walk ratio, a 3.15 FIP and 9.26 strikeouts per every 9 innings pitched this season with the Cleveland Indians.
3. Houston Astros Starting Pitcher Justin Verlander: Okay third guy on the list is Houston Astros Ace starting pitcher Justin Verlander. Justin is in his first full season with the Astros after being traded to them last season from the tigers on august 31st just seconds before the MLB trade deadline was going to be over. Last season Justin helped lead the Astros to their first World Series title over the Los Angeles Dodgers and was also named the ALCS MVP and married Kate Upton last year so it is pretty hard to come back from such an amazing 2017 season. But Justin was definitely able to replicate his 2017 magic in 2018.
Justin made it to his 7th all-star game appearance this year and his first since 2013. This season with the Houston Astros Justin has pitched in 33 games and in those 33 games he has gotten a 16-9 record, a 2.60 ERA, 280 strikeouts and an 0.91 WHIP. Justin has also gotten an amazing 34.5 strikeout percentage, a 7.78 strikeout to walk ratio, a 2.85 FIP and 12.12 strikeouts per every 9 innings pitched this season with the Houston Astros.
4. Houston Astros Starting Pitcher Gerrit Cole: Okay second to last guy and second pitcher from the Astros on this list is the Houston Astros other ace Gerrit Cole. Now just like trump I dig Cole. Gerrit just like Justin is very new to the Houston Astros with 2018 being his first season with the Astros. Unfortunately for Gerrit he was traded to the Astros last January so he unfortunately didn’t get a World Series ring like Justin did.
But that doesn’t seem to bother him because he has been on fire this season with the Astros making it to his second all-star game this year. This season with the Houston Astros Gerrit has pitched in 31 games and in those games he has gotten a 15-5 record, a 2.92 ERA, 272 strikeouts and an 1.03 WHIP. Gerrit has also gotten a 35.1 strikeout percentage, a 4.32 strikeout to walk ratio, a 2.71 FIP and 12.60 strikeouts per every 9 innings pitched this season with the Houston Astros.
5. New York Yankees Starting Pitcher Luis Severino: okay last but not least is not just the New York Yankees starting pitcher Ace but my own person favorite starting Pitcher Luis Severino. I have said it before a million times and I will say it a million times more I am not being biased with putting Luis on this list. Luis is an absolutely nasty pitcher with by far the nastiest four seam fastball out of any starting pitcher in the Bigs that regularly clocks in at 98 MPH. Luis made it to his second all-star game appearance this year with the Yankees.
This season with the New York Yankees Luis has pitched in 32 games and in those games he has gotten a 19-8 record, a 3.39 ERA, 220 strikeouts and an 1.14 WHIP. Luis has also gotten an amazing 28.2 strikeout percentage along with a very solid 4.78 strikeout to walk ratio, a 2.95 FIP and 10.35 strikeouts per every 9 innings pitched this season with the New York Yankees.
